2. FIRST KNOWN SCHOOL SHOOTERS IN AMERICA

Many people ask me when the first school shooting occurred and I come across early school shootings once in a while in my research. Here are the first four school shootings in American history that I can find. Many of these shootings did not get a lot of press, because they are such localized stories. If you know of an early school shooting, please let Phil know, so he can add it to his list.

January 17, 1974 - Steven Guy, 14, Chicago, Illinois, at Clara Barton Elementary School, opens fire and kills the principal, and wounds three others.

December 30, 1974 - Anthonly Barbaro, 18, Olean, New York, killed 3 and wounded 11. Depressed and suicidal, he hung himself in his jail cell before trial.

February 22, 1978 - Roger Needham, 15, Lansing, Michigan, shot 2 and killed 1. Needham was bullied, had a high IQ, and was into Hitler and Nazi beliefs.

January 29, 1979 - Brenda Spencer, 16, San Diego, California, opened fire at an elementary school across the street, killing the principal and a custodian, and injuring 9 others. The reason for the shooting was she "hated Mondays."

4. 20 QUESTIONS TO ASK A PARENT OF A VIOLENT TEEN

As a law enforcement officer, when you discover a possible violent teenager, and you set up a meeting with the parents, here are 25 questions you can ask the parents to determine if their teenager has the potential to commit homicide, or even suicide.

Has there been any trauma or abuse in this person’s life?

Have they suffered any loss in life, like a death of a relative or divorce?

Are they being bullied at school? How do you know or not know?

Is the child experiencing domestic violence in the home?

Is the child involved in pornography or violent/sexual entertainment, including video games, movies or music?

Is the child involved in pornography or violent/sexual entertainment, including video games, movies or music?

Is the child using drugs or alcohol, or are they currently prescribed any medications?

Is it possible that the child is involved in gang activity?

Is the child fascinated with deadly weapons (guns, knives, bombs, swords), and are there weapons in the home? How are the weapons secured?

Is the family involved in church? Is the child disciplined when they need correction, and how?

Is there a history of suicide in the family? Is the child showing any warning signs of suicide, like threats or giving away prized possessions?

Does the child wet the bed?

Is the child fascinated with fire and setting fires?

Has the child ever tortured or killed animals?

Has the child ever made a threat or statement about killing anyone, including family?

Have you ever seen anything violent or troubling in their schoolwork, artwork, or in their journal? Do they have a journal?

Does the child have a presence on the web, including a website, blog, MySpace, or Facebook?

Has the child ever showed any interest in school shootings, especially Columbine? Have they ever showed any interest in serial killers?

Has their appearance changed, including clothes and hair?

Have they every partaken in self-abuse activities?

Is it possible they are dating an older person?

What are their friends like?

5. 6 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO KEEP YOUR SCHOOL SAFE

If you ever wondered what you can do to make your school safer, here are 6 things Phil recommends in his live seminar:

  1. Hire a School Resource Officer to work at the school during all of the hours the school doors are opened
  2. Set up an anonymous tip line so students can tip off the school and police to future acts of violence, deadly weapons, drugs, or other crimes
  3. Establish a strong bullying police
  4. Consider parent involvement in policing the halls and the exterior of the school
  5. Lock the school building down while the students are in class, which limits the public from walking into the building unchecked
  6. Practice lockdown or active shooter drills, similar to fire drills

6. PHIL LOOKING FOR SPONSORS FOR HIS 2010 TOUR

Phil is currently looking for sponsors of his 2010 "Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer" seminar, and if you or anyone you know may be interested, please have them contact Phil Chalmers directly. His office number is (330) 998-4340. He will promote the sponsors during his live presentations nationwide.

Until next time everyone, stay safe, and do what you can to make a difference in a child's life! We can't save the world, but we can save one child at a time, one teenager at a time. Get busy, and God Bless!
